In preparation for the urgently needed renovation of the Pfauen – the main venue of the Schauspielhaus Zurich – theapro supported the feasibility study for the development of a suitable interim venue and comprehensively evaluated possible locations and building designs.
Added Value
The feasibility study provides the basis for an informed decision on the implementation of the interim venue during the renovation of the listed Pfauen theatre. In close consultation with users, the client and municipal authorities, theapro identified suitable options, clarified technical and functional requirements and evaluated them in a transparent manner using a comparative matrix analysis. The study allows for a realistic assessment of costs, deadlines and usability – thus ensuring the continuous operation of the Schauspielhaus Zürich.
Project Description
With around 600 performances and 20 premieres per year, the Schauspielhaus Zürich is one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world. The Pfauen, the theatre's traditional main venue with 750 seats, is to be comprehensively renovated and modernised after more than 40 years. In order to maintain operations during the construction period, the City of Zurich commissioned a feasibility study for the development of a temporary venue that would meet its needs.
theapro accompanied the study in two consecutive phases. In a first step, the requirements for space allocation, functionality and theatre operations were worked out together with users and the client. Based on this, theapro analysed possible existing properties and lightweight hall solutions at two locations, developed 3D models, checked the legal framework for approvals and media connections, and calculated demolition costs and time requirements.
In the second, more in-depth phase, the preferred options were developed in detail in collaboration with all theatre departments. In addition to the technical and functional evaluation, a cost of failure calculation and a benchmark comparison with comparable venues were carried out.
The result: a reliable basis for decision-making for the realisation of an economical and sustainable interim venue for the Pfauen.
